John the Baptist

December 8, 2019

Isaiah 11: 1-10              Psalm  72: 1-15       Matthew 3: 1-12

Who wants to wash in some smelly river?  (Naaman, 2 Kings 5)

The way to the manger might not be church

Matthew 3:1   In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’

John the Baptist:  a warning light

Matthew 3: 2  For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness…

Who does he think he is?

Matthew 3: 11  I baptize you with water for repentance, but he that is coming after me is mightier than I…

Who does he think we are?

Matthew 3: 7  But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, “YOU BROOD OF VIPERS!  Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?…

Matthew 3: 10  Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees..  Every tree therefore that does not bear fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

What’s to be done about it?

Matthew 3: 11  …he who is coming…

What is repentance?

  • changing your mind about your sin
  • changing your mind about Jesus
  • changing your mind about others

How can we be saved?

Mathew 3: 11  He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

And what we are waiting for (when He comes again)?

Isaiah 11:9 …the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.

A few things to consider…

  1. What is God saying about himself in Scripture today?
  2. What is He saying about you?
  3. What is your response?
